Geeky Beers
From Merideth at The Beer Geek
“Girls are beergeeks too…”
Beer isn’t just for beer geeks anymore. Here’s a few for the geek in you.
Star Wars Geek:
Imperial Stout Trooper
New England Brewing Company, Woodbridge, CT
The bottle of this robust Imperial Stout used the Star Wars font and the image of a Storm Trooper with the tagline, “Brewed in a brewery not too far away and not too long ago.” That is until George Lucas issued a cease and desist order in January 2010. New England Brewing still brews the recipe, but packages it in a different bottle. Put on your orange Rebel flight suit or slap a couple of Princess Leia cinnamon buns on the side of your head and get ready to battle this 8.5% ABV full-bodied beer.
Star Trek Geek:
Wrath of Pecant
Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales, Milton, DE
Dogfish Head creates “off-centered stuff for off-centered people” and who could be more off-center than a Trekkie (or Trekker, if you prefer). A collaborative brew between Dogfish and the Alström brothers from Beer Advocate magazine, Wrath of Pecant (6% ABV) is brownish ale brewed with pecan-wood, smoked malt, plantains, and carob. The brewery’s website suggests pairing it with “a sharp cheddar cheese, spicy lamb curry, or a woodgrilled pepperoni pizza.” I say bring it to your next Conversational Klingon class. All your bumpy head comrades with be sure to say, “tlho’ SoH!”
Beer Geek:
Dark Lord
Three Floyds Brewing Co., Munster, IN
So exclusive, this Russian Imperial Stout even has its own festival: Dark Lord Day, the only day of the year that it’s available for purchase. While attending DLD at the brewery is free, you must have a “Golden Ticket” in order to purchase this beer. The ticket offers the holder the privilege of standing in line for half a day to purchase a set allotment. That’s right, after buying the ticket, you still have to wait in line and pay for the bottles. Sold online, the tickets sell out in minutes. The begging and pleading will last for weeks, however, as beer geeks offer their first born children for a ticket.
Your Basic Geek:
Beer Geek Breakfast & Beer Geek Brunch
Mikkeller, Copenhagen
Mikkeller is a gypsy brewing company, meaning it doesn’t have a home base brewery of its own. Instead, Mikkeller brews at different breweries all over the world. Beer Geek Breakfast is brewed at Nøgne Ø in Norway. But enough of that…
I know it’s called Beer Geek Breakfast, but I think of it as a geek’s breakfast beer. It appeals to the beer geeks, coffee geeks, geeks into breakfast foods, and your plain old basic geeks alike. This 7.5% ABV Oatmeal Stout is brewed with coffee and the flavor and aroma so closely resemble the more traditional brewed breakfast beverage that you’ll be tempted to add cream and sugar. The perfect morning brew to go with your Cocoa Cocoa Puffs.
Like to sleep in a little later or are a cat geek? Mikeller also brews Beer Geek Brunch (also known as Weasel). At 10.9% ABV, this Imperial Oatmeal Stout is a sturdy beer with a special ingredient: Civet Coffee. One of the world’s most expensive coffees, it’s made from the droppings of the weasel-like Civetcats. These fussy Southeast Asian animals eat the best and ripest coffee berries. Enzymes in their digestive system help to break down the beans and then workers collect the bean-laden droppings. The exceedingly rare Civet Coffee has a strong taste and an even stronger aroma. You’ll never view cleaning the litter box the same again.

As a Chicagoan, I can say without a doubt that Three Floyd’s Dark Lord is worth the hassle! Also, don’t forget Tricerahops Double IPA by Nikasi Brewing Company for all the archeology nerds out there. Who doesn’t love dinosaurs?
